The Messy Church

Life is messy, people are messy … and the church is therefore messy. But would we want it any other way? If the church were perfect, that would simply mean we had stopped letting in the world’s wounded … that we had stopped being a triage space for the desperate, the needy, the oppressed, the orphaned, the widow. May it never be so.

I understand life is messy thus >>HUMAN<< institutions are messy. However, most of your religious brethren and the religious institutions don't admit to being 'messy', but are somehow above reproach because they are 'with a perfect God' and can do no malice (and some sit in pulpits praying for Armageddon to happen so they can be ‘reborn’ into ‘perfect’ bodies and laugh at all the other souls burning in damnation…)

It’s refreshing to find some religious folks that really do believe in doing good works for the sake of doing good works.

Hey, thanks Fast. And good to see you popping in!

I'm proof the church isn't perfect. If it was, they wouldn't have let me in! ;)

Mike's book "Messy Spirituality" is a must read. He would have enjoyed Crossroads.

Mike Yaconelli! The founder of one of my very favorite magazines ever -- The Wittenburg Door!

I've never read any of his books but I'll be sure to seek this one out. Thanks, Todd.

And you're right. He would have enjoyed Crossroads. :)

sadly, most western churches are only interested in those with perfect hair, teeth, clothes, and the illusion of perfect lives. one of the main reasons so many have turned away or are never allowed through the perfectly paneled doors.

i once belonged to a ministry to the broken and religiously discarded...to people not allowed into the mainstream due to hair, clothes, addictions, and even music choices...we were a rag-tag group of individuals...perfect as we were -- yet not accepted into the mainstream -- kids who didn't get the perfect smiley world of christian radio and tv.

yeah, life is messy as are people -- too bad so many faith communities refuse to acknowledge this truth.
