Nine Ways God Always Speaks*: Review and FREE BOOK GIVEAWAY CONTEST!

Nine Ways God Always Speaks*
*Offer only available in certain states
Authors: Mark Herringshaw & Jennifer Schuchmann
Publisher: Tyndale

Before reading this book, I was skeptical. It's typically my nature to be on my guard when reading books about "hearing God". I've been a Christfollower for about 30 years and have been exposed to many different teachings about hearing from God. Much of it was what I call weird, spooky, or even downright ridiculous.

Don't get me wrong. I hear from God myself in many different ways. Recently the topic came up in my own circle of friends about how do we know when it's God and not just wishful thinking or coincidence? Is this going to be another 'religious' book giving me step-by-step instructions -- if I do this, God will do that or if I don't do this God won't do that?

My fears and doubts were relieved right away with the first chapter.

The book is an easy read in contemporary and relevant language. Yet don't confuse an 'easy read' as not being challenging and thought-provoking. It most definitely is.

My eyes were opened to seeing the ways that God spoke to people during biblical times. Mary's excitement over the message that the angel spoke to her made me excited! This story, which I've heard and read hundreds of times since the time I was a child became truly human and alive by the authors' timely telling and language. All she could do was babble about God's goodness, His promise, and her love for Him. But what about Joseph? Here's a guy who is going to marry a 'good girl' who not only tells him some crazy story about being God speaking to her but that she is going to have a baby while still remaining a virgin. Can you imagine how Joseph must have felt? The doubts, the skeptism? Wouldn't that be our reaction as well? Yeah, right, sure, he must have thought.

So how does he overcome these doubts? God speaks to him through an angel as well. Not only did he end up believing but he was obedient to God's command and didn't have sex with her until after the baby Jesus was born. Would any man, unless he was convinced that he heard from God, abstain from consumating his marriage with his new bride unless he was sure that it was God he heard from? Not only is this proof that Mary's story was true, it's proof that Joseph heard from God as well.

Rarely does God speak to us and ask such crazy things of us. But if He spoke to them and they were convinced it was God's voice, why is it so far-fetched to some of us that He still speaks to us today?

On page four the authors write,

"One reason people say they don't pray more is because they feel as if nothing happens when they pray, that God isn't listening, or worse, that He is not there at all.

A one-sided relationship isn't worth much.

If we're expected to talk to God through prayer, shouldn't we know whether He will talk back? And if He will, how will we hear Him?"

This book helps to answer those questions in practical, mysterious, logical, illogical, and meaningful ways. It asks as many, if not more, questions than it answers. This is a good thing as it encourages you to read and learn of the differnt ways that God speaks and recognize them when you encounter them. It doesn't tell you how God will speak to you, but that He does, and will if we are listening as it tells of many of the ways He does this. Only through listening and hearing other people's stories -- the ones that God told about in the Bible and the regular, every day people of today -- can we learn to be sensitive to God's voice, to discern what is Him and what is the noise of the world, what is real and what is, well, crazy.

In my own personal experience of hearing God so clearly that there was no denying it was Him -- dreams so vivid and full of knowledge and insights that I never would have know on my own (to one of my pastors at that!), to expected, to pictures that God gives me (I guess the common biblical term is visions), to visiting people in one area of South Africa where povety and AIDS is rampant, returning to the same area a year later to be greeted by joyful spirits and healthy bodies, seeing the lame walk a day after we prayed for them, teaching classes to South Africans in our native American language and having the interrepter come up to thank the teacher for speaking to them in the language of Zulu -- when she spoke English the entire time but they heard Zulu! The list of His amazing ways of revealing Himself and speaking to us and through us, through others, and through His word did not end after Jesus left this earth. It continues today and this book will encourage you, amaze you and make you hungry to hear more from our incredible God.

I want to listen. I want to know more. I want to hear God in all I do, think, act, and see.

Do you want to know, too? If so, this book can help you in your journey of learning to listen and hear God personally in your own life as well.

*** Want to learn more? Leave a comment stating your thoughts, or share a story of how God has spoken to you, maybe how you want to know if He is speaking to you, or anything that is on your mind about how God speaks today, or simply why you would like to have this book. Sounds like an insightful, thought-provoking book, backed up by Scripture. I, too, have experienced God speaking to me in several different ways. It's always amazing and fun to have Him speak in a new way! And I've seen WAY too many answers to prayer to have any doubt that He hears. Our prayers and our words are POWERFUL in the spirit realm! Enjoyed your review, Joyce!

should be an interesting read, I would like to comment breifly on hearing from God. my belief is that God deals and speaks to us individually, based partly on our faith and needs. When we think about how God speaks to us, obviously we have to consider the word and how it lines up with it, but I think a large part of it is having the faith and discernment to recieve it, and I think trying to limit God would be a mistake. I dont recall the book, chapter and verse, but the word speaks about us using faith, calling things into existance, that aren't, as though they were, and thats deep faith. Being on the potters wheel any lengthy sum of time can sure enhance your faith, and ability to hear from him, lol, my opinion anyways, and I've learned that God speaks a lot to us, even if our prayers dont manifest in the natural when we expect. thier are so many variables to this, but I would say, be in expectation, and remember that patients is better practiced, than learned, and thats his will for us. I would like to say that so far as hearing God, I try to stay open, even to the wierd and silly, but thats just my faith and character. I just dont believe bad stuffs about me:-)

As a godless heathen non-believer I'd very much like to learn how God speaks to people.

I've always assumed he puts the most deserving of his faithful on his "Fav Five" speed dial.

Of course, since I'd never actually pay for such a book, it would behoove you, Joyce, to award said volume to ME for my perusal.

Afterall, what's the point of giving it to a believer who chats with God already, when you have perhaps a 1 in 1000 (to the 20th power)chance of converting a heathen?

You have my address. I wait with bated (baited?) breath.
Thanks,
Hump

I think God talks to us in different ways at different times. Recently I was awakened from a deep sleep early in the morning with a strong urgency to pray for my son and his attorney about some paperwork that had been filed with the court clerk. I had no idea what I needed to pray for specifically, but I knew I needed to pray. Later that week when we spoke to the attorney, the paperwork had been filed without my son's signature. It was discovered by the clerk and returned to the attorney. If the clerk had presented this to the judge without my son's signature, the petition would have been voided and we could have lost an opportunity that we would not have been able to get another chance at. I am sorry for being so vague as this is still ongoing, but I know it was the Holy Spirit stirring me awake that morning to pray on my son's behalf so that the paperwork would not be presented to the judge. He speaks and He moves.

I feel like God has spoken to me though deep conviction, usually for something I wouldn't want to do on my own, like when I was lead to work in China for a year.

Joyce, I always love your insight. You are such an inspiration. Your faith is so obvious! I believe God speaks to us in many ways, but my walk with Him is that of a newborn, and I am still learning. I'm sure the Lord has spoken to me many times, in ways I didn't even grasp, but the one time I heard his resounding voice inside my head was when I was struggling with the troubles my daughter was going thru. She was using heroin, and I was just sick over it....physically, emotionally and spiritually. It was then I heard God's voice say to me "I trusted you enough to give you the gift of these children and you've done the best you can. Now that it's time to give them back to me, why can't you trust me the way I trusted you?" It was very humbling, b/c I realized that they are ultimately HIS children, and He has a plan for them that I am powerless over. I still struggle with surrendering them and I guess it's just that 'mother-hen' syndrome....but this voice gave me hope that He will find a way to bring my children to Him with a power far beyond anything I can do.
Love you....hope I see you soon!

God speaks to us often and we aren' ready to listen to Him! We have to pray to be open to His voixe and to be ready to listen when He speaks to us! He is so awesome and we are so weak and powerless we just seem to miss it when He does speak!

Looks like a great read.
I could write a big book about God's love for us.
He has done quite a few miracles in my life and has spoken to me
to let me know that He loves me and will always take care of me.
He also said He is coming soon.
So those things that are spoken by Him to you,
can also be found in the bible so you know that these are very true words.
Thanks for the chance!

God has spoken to me many ways, but mostly in dreams. I tend to have premonitions about people I'm close to. It reminds me to pray for them and check in.

I think I would enjoy this book. As for hearing God's voice (this could be long): Last December we had three large expenses within 6 days: our water heater had to be replaced, our car needed brake work & our truck needed a new water pump. After depleting our savings to pay for all these, one week after spending $650 to fix the truck my husband totaled it.

It turned out to be (completely) a God thing, because right after that we were relocated to Boston for 3 months (and given a rental car for use as well as having great public transportation), it "paid off" the loan we had and allowed us to pay off other bills and get further out of debt.

Now we never question what happens- even if it's bad we know God has a plan- even if we don't see it immediately.

God most definitely still speaks today and I love the song "He still speaks, I know His voice". I've been instructed by the Holy Spirit to pray for someone many times without knowing why and find out later the reason. This sounds like an inspiring book to read for anyone interested in becoming more deeply spiritual.

I would love to read this book and see if it can give me specific insights into deciphering the way God speaks to us. Not all of us 'hear' his voice, we get messages other ways and I'd like to see if this book touches on them.

I know God speaks to us in many different ways. Only nine ways? Only available in certain states? :)

It is sometimes hard to keep faith when things do not go the way that you hoped and prayed they would. I would love to find ways to keep strong and remember that God is always there for me, even if his plan for me is different than mine.

Christina - xristya@rock.com - After living a very active life as an adult, I suddenly had some very difficult health problems and could only do my writing work on the internet and not go outdoors much. Something kept telling me to enter contests in my spare time, and I won some and got gifts for other people (which made me happy) and then this also ended up resulting in being able to become a movie review and a book reviewer (realize that before this I was doing TV programs for years and ALWAYS on the go!)! So then I no longer felt so helpless!
