Fair Questions for Sarah Palin

From "God's Politics: A Blog by Jim Wallis & Friends"

After Sarah Palin was selected by John McCain as the Republican vice-presidential candidate, reporters asked me whether the pick was desperate, brilliant, or risky. I said, “yes.” Only time will answer the question about the wisdom of McCain’s choice. But soon after the announcement, the firestorm began. I said that it was a double standard to criticize this mother for running for high office because she had five children, including a special needs child and a pregnant teenage daughter. Unless we are also going to ask men (fathers) the same question, we should not ask it of a working woman who decides to run for political office. Families in public life certainly need to take good care of their kids, but that is a mutual and family responsibility, not just for the mom.

And then some media started going after Palin’s faith and church. One night I watched Keith Olbermann of MSNBC say something like “Sarah Palin goes to a church where they speak in tongues, believe in the Rapture, and think you can pray away the gay.” Please Keith, you may not understand religion, but don’t offend evangelicals and Pentecostals who either like Palin’s politics or don’t, but see nothing wrong with their religion. Palin was a curveball to the Obama campaign, which at first had no real idea as to how to respond. But while they made many mistakes, they didn’t resort to the attacks on her family and faith that some in the media did.

But now Republicans are crying crocodile tears and accusing anybody who questions Palin’s record, experience, or readiness to lead as part of the liberal cultural elite that is just out to get ordinary people like Palin and the rest of us. Yesterday I spoke to a newspaper columnist, a committed Christian, who knows he will be attacked as anti-Christian if he focuses on the political facts of Palin. Is she the reformer she claims to be? What is her knowledge of the world, of foreign policy issues, of the complicated relationship between the use of diplomacy and force in conflict situations? Do her statements and positions on energy and economic policy comport with the facts and with what is needed to make major changes in direction on both? And most of all, does her experience, knowledge, and perspective give her the judgment, competence, and prudence to become the next president of the United States should something happen to the president?

Those are entirely fair questions for Palin, Joe Biden, John McCain, or Barack Obama. They are about the facts, the issues (not the personalities as I discussed in my last post), and the leadership qualities (which is different) needed to govern the country.

Yeah... uh huh. Look. Those whacked out charasmatic tongue talking nut cases belong in a side show, not in the VP position.

I wonder exactly how magnanomous and accepting Old Jim would be if the VP nominee was a Satan worshipping, goat sacrificing/blood driking, hedonistic, Pagan. I mean in reality, not in lip service.

The fact that she's a christian doesnt make her nutty 19th century thinking, theatrical, ultra conservative, self deluding, anti-gay/woman subjugating sect any more comforting to me than that Satan worshipper would be to Jim.

I smell hypocrite...but then, Rev. Barry Lynn doesn't exactly put Jim Wallis on the pedestal of clear/honest thinking all the time either.

Jim Wallis is an activist who is also a Christian. I don't think that he would be concerned if a candidate was a satan worshipper if he/she was concerned about the issues that are important to our country and our world.

Who's Barry Lynn? Are you going to make me google?

The Rev Barry Lynn is the exec director of Americans United for Seperation of Church and State. His is a Church of Christ minister, and lawyer...and activist defender of our secular and religious rights.

i just read his book "Piety and Politics: The right wing assault on religious freedom" and was very impressed. enough to send money and sign up for the AUSCS.

I will be posting a brief boo review on my website soon.

as For Wallis not having a prob with a Satanist... or an atheist... VP nominee, allow me to submit the following: BULL HOCKY!!!

Ah, cool. I'll definitely look that up and look forward to your "boo review". lol

Hmmm...either their site is temporarily not accepting new comments, or I've finally been banned. I cant get Sojournbers to post my input.

so much for free speech and contradictory ideas.

I can't even get the page to fully load in less than 10 minutes. The comments look really low ... less than 10 on most new blogs, less than 5 on a few. Dunno.

So you're going to vote for Obama?

Google what he has said will be the first thing that he will do if he wins.

(I'm NOT voting for McCain either.)

I am voting for Obama. I believe that he better reflects the issues that are closest to my heart and the heart of Jesus -- poverty (care for the poor), peace (my peace I leave, my peace I give you), health care (heal the sick), love your enemy/love your neighbor (and who is my neighbor? Jesus told a story of a man who was considered the enemy who was indeed our neighbor).

I don't think that McCain is a humanitarian and I certainly don't think that with his temperment he's qualified to talk to the leaders of other countries and negotiate. He can't even control his temper during a debate.

I do hope you're voting, Anon, and I hope it's not a throwaway vote for someone who is not in the running. There's too much at stake this election to not do so.

As far as passing the Freedom of Choice act, I understand your concern as you are prolife.

However, this is the presidential election. The president's obligation is to uphold the constitution.

We are voting for a president, not a pastor.

What I will tell you is what the Bible has already told you to do: pray for our leaders. (That's pray for, not prey on.)
